Instead, our research shows that there are a variety of crowdsourcing methods suitable for tasks of varying scope and complexity. Our Intelligent Crowds framework encompasses three different types of crowdsourcing, providing guidance for managers who want to use crowdsourcing to solve business problems and increase opportunities for innovation. Intelligent Crowd Framework Crowdsourcing tasks can be organized according to a series of problems from low to high complexity From simple descriptions of new product ideas utilizing a limited number of knowledge areas, to highly complex working prototypes such as new spacecraft requiring integration across multiple knowledge areas.


Building connections between individuals in wired crowds to learn from each other or forming crowd teams can enable smart crowds to solve problems of increasing scope and complexity. The best type of population depends on the scope and complexity of the problem you are trying to solve.
